“We the People of the United States…”
Those beautiful words that form the opening sentence to the preamble of our Constitution proclaim the nature of American government, which was later summarized by President Abraham Lincoln as a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
In practical terms, however, the government actually belongs only to those who show up and participate. Everyone else is along for the ride.
Any eligible individual who does not vote has no advantage over an individual who cannot vote.
Every American citizen willing to show up can have a voice in his/her local, state, and federal government. In order for your voice to be heard, you must first have a ticket to enter the conversation. That ticket is your ballot, and you obtain it simply by registering to vote.
